Patient education that gets through
Patients prepare for their procedure in the way they read, listen and understand best – in their language and at their own pace. The patient portal is based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA.
Principle
Consent is only as good as the understanding behind it
Anyone who consents to a procedure must understand what they are consenting to. Impaired vision, hearing loss, a different first language or simply nerves before the procedure make this harder. That is why medudoc designs the patient side of the platform so that patients decide display, language and pace for themselves.
- Adjustable font size and contrast
- Videos with subtitles and reading version
- Patient education in plain language
- Content in 23 languages
Seeing
Font size and contrast as needed
Whether it is small text on a smartphone or impaired vision – patients adjust the display in the patient portal themselves.
Adjustable font size
Patients set the font size in the patient portal themselves – for medical history, patient education and consent.
Increased contrast
A high-contrast display makes reading easier with impaired vision or in poor lighting.
On their own device
The patient portal runs in the browser on smartphone, tablet and computer, with no app to install. Patients use the device they are familiar with.
Hearing
Every video understandable without sound
The patient education videos combine spoken explanation, images and text. This means they also reach patients with impaired hearing.
Spoken and illustrated
Every patient education video explains the procedure with spoken text and illustrations.
Subtitles on demand
Subtitles can be switched on and off at any time – as helpful with impaired hearing as in a noisy environment.
Reading version
Patients can also open the content of the video as text and read it at their own pace.
Pause and repeat
Videos can be paused and watched as often as needed. Patients can repeat difficult passages until they have understood them.
Understanding
Medicine in plain language
The German Civil Code (BGB) requires patient education that patients can understand (Section 630e(2) sentence 1 no. 3 BGB). That is why medudoc deliberately writes the patient education videos in plain language.
Plain language instead of jargon
The patient education videos explain the procedure, its course and its risks in a way that lay people can follow. medudoc produces all content itself and reviews it for currency at least once a year.
Personalised instead of generic
The patient education video and the Informed Consent Sheet (IC Sheet) are created for each patient individually, based on their medical history and the procedure. Patients see what is relevant to their case.
Well prepared for the consent discussion
Patients note down questions for their doctor directly while watching the video. The video prepares the consent discussion; the personal conversation remains the core element.
Access and language
No barriers to their own case
Anyone who receives an invitation can start straight away – no installation, no account and in their own language.
- languages for patient education content
- 23
- Access via the browser on smartphone, tablet or computer
- No app
- Personal access code by email, text message or QR code – no account, no password

- Preparation at their own pace, with breaks and as often as needed
- At home
- Legally binding consent is given on the German original; the translation helps patients whose first language is not German to understand it.
- Your physicians set the language of patient education for each case.
- The consent discussion takes place on site, telemedically or in a hybrid format – depending on the procedure and risk profile.
- With a low risk profile, the entire preparation can take place from home.
Guidelines
Based on WCAG 2.1 AA
In designing the patient portal, medudoc is guided by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. Accessibility is an ongoing process – new features are developed with readability, contrast and plain language in mind, and existing ones are improved step by step.
