One process for surgery and anaesthesia

Before an operation, two specialties provide patient education – often with duplicate questionnaires and separate appointments. medudoc combines both in one questionnaire, one patient education video and one consent sheet. The consent discussion takes place on site or by telemedicine.

Bilingual consent sheet for cholecystectomy with anaesthesia, German original on the left and translation on the right, with a section from the medical history, a physician's note, two signatures and the appendix.

One questionnaire instead of two

Surgery and anaesthesia ask the same – medudoc asks only once

Before a cholecystectomy, both specialties ask many of the same questions. medudoc combines them in one questionnaire per procedure, supplemented by specialty-specific questions.

Joint patient education

One case, one video, one document

Two specialties provide patient education, each under its own responsibility. medudoc combines both in one process without blurring responsibilities.

  • One questionnaire
  • One video
  • One document
  • One case in the HCP Dashboard

Surgery and anaesthesia see the same information. Each specialty reviews its part; anaesthesia classifies the risk, surgery determines the procedure.

  • One video for procedure and anaesthesia

medudoc assembles the personalised patient education video from short sequences. Shared content such as preparation and the sequence on the day of surgery appears only once.

  • One consent sheet across specialties

Surgical and anaesthesiological patient education are combined in one bilingual document. Physicians add annotations before signature.

  • Your choice

    Joint or separate discussions

Your hospital decides per procedure whether both specialties hold one joint consent discussion or separate ones. medudoc supports both models.

Evidence

Shorter consent discussions in visceral surgery

University Hospital Würzburg compared video-assisted and conventional surgical patient education. With video, the median physician discussion time before cholecystectomy and colon resection fell significantly. Patient understanding and satisfaction were high in both groups.

Physician discussion time in minutes (median)

Cholecystectomy

Cholecystectomy, Video-assisted: 1.5 min (95% CI 1.1–2.3)
Cholecystectomy, Conventional: 8.1 min (95% CI 7.4–10.5)

Colon resection

Colon resection, Video-assisted: 3.3 min (95% CI 2.1–4.6)
Colon resection, Conventional: 11.9 min (95% CI 10.4–16.4)

Median with 95% confidence interval; 107 patients before cholecystectomy, 46 before colon resection. Percentages calculated from the medians.

On site or by telemedicine

The consent discussion where it fits

The physician decides, depending on the procedure and risk profile, whether a telemedical consent discussion is sufficient. Both paths start with the same preparation at home.

  • Telemedical

Consent discussion by phone or video

For planned procedures with low risk, when the physician considers a telemedical consent discussion sufficient.

    1. 1

Record the medical history for surgery and anaesthesia at home

    2. 2

Review and approve the case in the HCP Dashboard

    3. 3

Watch the patient education video and read the consent sheet at home

    4. Consent discussion by phone or videoDiscussion

    5. 5

No additional appointment in the outpatient clinic.

  • On site

In the outpatient clinic, well prepared

For complex procedures, pre-existing conditions or when an examination is needed.

One document for both specialties

The result is the consent sheet as a PDF/A with the consent trail and medical history in the appendix – archived audit-proof and transferred to the HIS.

Consent sheets

Patient education content for general surgery

The medudoc medical editorial team creates consent sheets and patient education videos for general surgical procedures and reviews them at least once a year. Each sheet can be combined with the matching anaesthesia technique into one document.

    Hernia surgery

Inguinal, umbilical, incisional and diaphragmatic hernias.

  2. 02

    Gallbladder, stomach and pancreas

    Upper abdominal procedures.
